BUÑUEL IN THE LABYRINTH OF THE TURTLES

DIRECTED BY Salvador Simó

“Las Hurdes: tierra sin pan” is the only documentary directed by Luis Buñuel. That was back in the year 1933. It denounced the extreme poverty endured by the inhabitants of the southwestern region of Spain, specifically the area in Extremadura that lends its name to the documentary. A film so harsh and incisive that it was banned by the government of the Second Republic. This animated film, which adapts Fermín Solís’ eponymous comic for the screen, meta-cinematically reconstructs the intricate filming of Buñuel’s documentary and paints a precise, unsparing portrait of the complex personality of the creator of «Viridiana.» Universally acclaimed by critics, it won the European Film Award and the Goya for Best Animated Film. Additionally, Arturo Cardelús’ outstanding soundtrack garnered prizes at the Annecy and Malaga festivals.»

Paris, 1930. Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel are already the main figures of the Surrealist movement. Unexpectedly, Buñuel is left moneyless after the scandal surrounding his film THE GOLDEN AGE. In this difficult situation, he cannot even tackle his next project, a documentary about one of the poorest Spanish regions, Las Hurdes. However, his good friend, sculptor Ramón Acín, buys a lottery ticket with the promise that, if he wins, he will pay for the film. Incredibly, luck is on their side.
