It was a pride and privilege for Latido to represent «The Constitution,» Rajko Grlic’s previous film, one of the fundamental directors of Yugoslav cinema first, and Croatian cinema later. A controversial and committed film that received a dozen international awards, including the Grand Prix of the Americas in Montreal in 2016. After that film, Grlic had only directed a couple of documentaries and now returns in a big way to put the finishing touch to his brilliant filmography with this powerful and vibrant thriller that denounces the systemic corruption of Politics, Justice, and the Media in some countries and immerses us, as rarely seen before, in the mechanisms that move the gears of modern democracies. A daring, uncomfortable, and uncompromising film, which is sure to disturb the powers that be and is based on a successful novel from the 1930s, «On the Edge of Reason,» by the prestigious writer Miroslav Krleža, which Grlic has adapted to modern times to turn it into a story of universal depth that could unfold in any European country, in the vein of the Spanish film «The Realm,» by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and echoing the classic Robert Rossen’s «The Politician.»
Maks is a brilliant lawyer who has been serving one of Croatia’s most powerful and ruthless businessmen for years, who made his fortune in the aftermath of the Balkan War. His latest service has been to have him declared innocent of the murder of two of his workers for acting in self-defense. But the sudden appearance of a former girlfriend triggers a crisis of conscience in Maks, leading him to confront his employer and risk his life by uncovering a dense network of corruption at the highest level involving all branches of the State.
