WHERE PARADISE ONCE WAS

DIRECTED BY Gerardo Herrero

A co-production between Spain, Brazil, and Argentina, in which producer and director Gerardo Herrero adapts the novel of the same name by Chilean author Carlos Franz. A political and family thriller set in the 1980s that unfolds in Iquitos, in the Peruvian Amazon, ‘where paradise once was.’ The presence of actor Federico Luppi is, as usual, overwhelming.

In Iquitos, the Consul of a nameless country must face a double pursuit: one from the local authorities that are looking for apolitical refugee, and another from the uncontrolled jealousy of his daughter Anna, who has just arrived with him to celebrate her nineteen birthday. An ominous atmosphere is set in this old rubbercity with a magnificent past, isolated in the Peruvian Amazon. Hotland, surrounded by rivers, the last one in the frontier where, as the villagers say “once it was the Paradise.” but this is also a land of torrential rains, where everyone can breathe the stagnant smell of drug and death. The news from the world arrive as remote echo to this equatorial world that divides the characters in irreconcilable ethical hemispheres: this of the furious passion and intrigue and that of the love that goes from the shameful to the tragedy
